Welcome to Pantry ("we," "our," or "us"). We are committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your personal information when you use our mobile application.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Information You Provide
- Account information: Email address, name, and authentication credentials (Sign in with Apple, Google, or email).
- Pantry data: Food items you add, including names, quantities, expiration dates, photos, and barcodes.
- User preferences: Dietary preferences, allergies, cooking skill level, household size, notification settings.
- Receipt images: Photos of receipts you scan for automatic item entry. Images are processed in real-time for item extraction and are not stored permanently after processing.
1.2 Automatically Collected Information
- Usage analytics: App usage patterns, feature interactions, performance metrics.
- Device information: Device type, OS version, unique device identifiers.
- Log data: Error logs, crash reports, diagnostic information.
1.3 Information from Third Parties
- Product databases: Product and nutrition information retrieved from USDA FoodData Central and third-party databases.
- Authentication providers: Basic profile information from Sign in with Apple or Google.
2. How We Use Your Information
- Core services: Track pantry items, send expiration reminders, manage food inventory.
- Receipt processing: Extract item names, prices, and quantities from receipt images using AI.
- Nutrition data: Provide nutrition information for pantry items from databases and AI estimates.
- AI features: Generate recipe suggestions and ingredient substitutions (Premium).
- Personalization: Customize recommendations based on dietary preferences and household size.
- Analytics: Calculate waste reduction and cost savings statistics.
- Notifications: Send push notifications for expiring items and meal suggestions.
- Subscriptions: Process Premium subscriptions via RevenueCat.
3. AI and Receipt Processing
Pantry uses artificial intelligence to process receipt images and provide nutrition information. This section describes how AI is used and what data is involved.
- Receipt image processing: Receipt images are sent to Google Gemini AI for item extraction. Images are processed in real-time and are not stored by Google after processing. Only the extracted item list (product names, prices, quantities) is saved to your account.
- Nutrition estimation: When exact product matches are not available in our database, AI may be used to estimate nutrition values. These estimates are labeled as "estimated" in the app and should not be relied upon for medical or dietary decisions.
- Product matching: AI assists in matching abbreviated receipt text to full product names for accurate pantry tracking.
- Consent: AI processing requires your explicit consent, which is requested during onboarding. You may withdraw consent at any time in Settings.
4. Third-Party Services

- USDA FoodData Central: Nutrition information database (public data, no personal information shared).

5. Data Sharing and Disclosure
We do not sell your personal information. We may share data only:
- With service providers listed above to deliver app functionality.
- When required by law, court order, or government request.
- To protect the rights, property, or safety of our users.
- In connection with a merger or acquisition (with notice to you).
We share ingredient data with Instacart to enable grocery purchasing. When you use the "Shop ingredients" feature, your selected ingredients are sent to Instacart. Instacart's privacy policy governs their use of this data.
6. Data Storage and Security
- All data in transit is encrypted via HTTPS/TLS.
- Data at rest is encrypted in Firebase Firestore.
- Access is restricted to authorized systems via Firebase Authentication.
- Receipt images are processed in real-time and not stored after item extraction.
Data location: Your data may be stored and processed in the United States.
7. Data Retention
We retain your data while your account is active. When you delete your account:
- All pantry data, preferences, and account information are permanently deleted within 30 days.
- Backup copies are deleted within 90 days.
- Anonymized, aggregated analytics data may be retained for service improvement.
8. Your Rights and Choices
- Access: View and export your pantry data at any time.
- Correction: Edit your account information and pantry items.
- Deletion: Delete your account and all data from Settings.
- AI consent: Withdraw AI processing consent at any time.
- Opt-out: Disable push notifications in device settings.
If you are located in the EEA (GDPR) or California (CCPA), you have additional rights including data portability, right to erasure, and right to object to processing. Contact us to exercise these rights.
9. California Privacy Rights (CCPA)
California residents have the right to know what personal information is collected, request deletion of personal information, and opt out of the sale of personal information. Pantry does not sell personal information to third parties.
10. Children's Privacy
Pantry is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. Contact us immediately if you believe we have.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes via in-app notification and update the date at the top.
